North Carolina Pottery:

featuring pieces created by Nell Cole Graves (1908 – February 17, 1997) who is known as the first female potter in the Seagrove, North Carolina pottery tradition.

Cole was a prolific potter with many current day Seagrove potters claiming her as an influence. She was the daughter of J.B. Cole and a sister to Waymon Cole. She married Philmore Graves and owned Graves Candle Shop as well as J.B. Cole Pottery (now closed), which was located south of Seagrove in Moore County near the Randolph & Montgomery County lines.

Vintage North Carolina Pottery Pitcher-J.B. Cole
Item #2104

This piece of North Carolina southern art pottery from J B Cole Pottery, Seagrove, NC, is a small finely turned vase in the pottery's beautiful colonial cream, sometimes called red-eye gravy, glaze. It is a typical example of this glaze, mostly light cream with accents of red/brown around and near the rim of the vase. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs. The glaze is glossy and there are a some reflections in the photos. Any shiny places are reflections and are not a part of the glaze. It is 5 inches tall and 3 3/4 inches wide at its widest point. It is unmarked but bears the tripod marks characteristic of J B Cole pottery. It dates from the 1960's or 1970's when Nell Cole Graves, Virginia Shelton, and Waymon Cole turned at the pottery. Wonderful color!
